Tegal Wangi Beach – My Backyard Hidden Gem

It was one lazy Sunday morning, my (one & only) lovely neighbor, Jeff, asked me to join him walking his two dogs to the beach. Walk? To the beach? Where? yawning me as zapping this remote control seemed much easier and sweat-free. He promised it would be just a quick dog walking around the neighborhood and that I won’t regret when I see this hidden gem located behind our residential complex in Puri Gading, Jimbaran, Bali.

Living in Jimbaran gives the advantage of easy access to the beautiful beaches in Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Uluwatu area. Just to name a few : Muaya Beach, Dreamland (that has a new baptized name : ‘new Kuta Beach‘), Padang padang, Bingin, Suluban…and most of the spots are reachable by my speedy motorbike in 10-15 minutes max of time. But to be able to walk to the beach from my house? Interesting!

So here I am holding tight to the dog lash as Nero, the naughty black dog tried to drag me along the bumpy road on this particular street inside the residential complex of mine that leads me to the entrance gate of the luxurious Ayana Resort on Jalan Karang Mas Sejahtera, then we continued to walk to the countryside road to the right. What I thought would be a nice peaceful beach walk with a pair of cute dogs turned out to be a 5K (not so Fun) Run with four barking dogs as Jeff’s friend, Gunawan joined us bringing more tails to the team…The four dogs (specially teckel-rottweiler brown Bimbo!) stopped every 10 min for pee-stop, give them water as they’re drooling and dehydrated and rest under the tree break…This must be the hardest day in their lazy Bali dog’s life..

Just when I thought I would also need a pee-stop and rest under the tree break, the ocean breeze greeted us and right below the large parking space in front of Pura Segara, from this hill you will see this blue water with curling waves hitting the beach. Magnificent view! How do we get down there??…Hike down the off-beaten path, my friends..Make sure you wear non-slippery shoes or sandals. It is not a beach finding path as usual. Tegal Wangi is not really a secluded beach, but it is much less popular than other ones along the Uluwatu coastal lines. There were literally me, Jeff, Gunawan and the 4 tail boys playing with joy in the water, when you see dogs barking and run happily and shaking splashing their tails, on the beach, you know, it’s a good day…A good sunny day in Bali, just right on my Jimbaran backyard!

The view from the top is amazing!…and local fishermen were there just to catch some small fishes for family brunch 🙂

Not only that! This backyard gem has two ‘ocean jacuzzis’ you could only see it when it’s not a high tide. God must have thought I need an affordable luxury leisure time in Bali when He created Tegal Wangi beach! When I came back with my Benny for another jacuzzi time at Tegal Wangi Beach, we made sure we bring a root loofah and coral stone to scrub each other’s back and rough foots..It’s love bird time on the beach! Unfortunately, when the high tide is on, you will not be able to see these two beach basins, it is actually dangerous to stay inside the cave where we usually throw our stuffs and lay down on our sarongs, as the big waves will soon hit the cave and suck everything back to the ocean in seconds!

And so the backyard hidden gem search continues…

  1. Bee….ngeliat foto yang di karang-karang itu…langsung inget ombak besar yang masuk ke gua….ternyata di foto2 keliatan cukup curam ya kita turunnya…

    1. Hi Ma! really nice to have my BFF finally landed here! :p Yes! We did have a great ‘adventurous’ time at Tegal Wangi, that cave experience was so scary when the wave struck, and you almost lost your BB! Next time we’ll visit TW again and enjoy the jacuzzi! :p

  2. HI Bee,

Wow the beach look amazing! Thx for sharing.
Really love your block. On the 29th of august we will visit Bali for the 4th time..Really in love with the Island!

    Greetings from The Netherlands,

  3. Hi Bee,

This just looks stunning. We often forget the beautiful places around us as we’re looking to find those far far away.

  4. Hi Bee.. this is my first time commenting on people’s web 🙂
But love the view.. lucky you!
Never been there, don’t know the area… maybe hopefully you’ll inform me so we can visit your new born around March yah?

  5. Hi Bee!

Just wondering! Was this the beach that you didn’t want to name in your previous post about the top 5 beaches in Bali?

    Thanks, Wen Li

  6. Hi Bee!

I’m traveling in Bali with my boyfriend for 3 months. We intend to do it as ‘local’ as possible and are less interested in touristy places so we try to ride down the roads of Bali everyday to discover hidden local beautiful places to enjoy peace, true local food and people.
This morning I woke up thinking I should have a look on-line for some less touristy beaches to go to. As we live in Ubud (and we love it) at the moment there aren’t many people to ask about beaches…and so I found your blog! Lucky me! It’s so very helpful and relieving to see there are lovely non touristy places to go in southern peninsula.
We will hop up our bike today and head off Tegalwangi first, hopefully there will be no rain, to start out own beach-finding journey.
    Thank you!

  7. Hi Ana! Wow, will you share the pictures with us here? tweet me @gabybali ! Hope you are enjoying your Bali getaway so far. Try to visit Payangan Village in Ubud as well! Have a cup of tea at The Payangan Hideaway Villa, enjoy the scenery from their open style lobby. Call +62 (361)746 2268 for direction

  8. Hey Bee!

I am outdated indeed. Found your blog through one of your 2009 post about your favorite beaches, recently. What a life you have! I’ve been to Bali thrice(can’t get enough of it) but never got the chance to explore most of the beaches you’ve mentioned. You seem like a great person living in an awesome place!! I would love to meet you someday! Heading there in June for Bali Arts Fest and hoping that I could find all the beaches you’ve mentioned.

Have a good day Bee! 🙂

    1. Thanks Tom! Just looked at your website, Villa Pantai looks nice! We rarely go out to Candi Dasa, but your property might be an option for my blog readers who’d come to Bali and explore Karangasem area. Cheers!

  9. Been there a couple of times but most of the time I was just standing there near the cliff’s edge and took photographs, as the tide was almost always frightening. Quite mesmerizing view, but never seen the two Jacuzzi though 🙂

    1. Bayu, thanks for your comment, you need to go back to Tegal Wangi Beach in the afternoon around 4pm on low tide (or check Bali tide chart before you go), the two nature jacuzzi are there, waiting for you to soak! Cheers, Bee

    1. Titin : kalo sama Audri agak susah, kasian Mike yg gendongnya ke bawah bisa ngglinding kebawah nyungsep :p Gampangg..titip Audri ama mamamu aja, kabur bawa bikini ke Tegal Wangi, gimana?

  10. Went there as soon as i read this article. Too bad the tide were quite high that time, and most of the beach areas were covered with water. Still a nice place to visit tho..

    1. There are still lots of hidden beaches wait to be discovered. Go to Tegal Wangi asap before everyone’s heading there 🙂 Thanks!

  11. Hi Bee,
great writeup on beaches review on your blog!
Our small family (wife, son aged 4 and 9mo infant) are heading to Bali next week and wants a slice of beautiful non-touristy beach, just to relax and have a splash. Is this suitable for us and what will be right timing to go to Tegal Wangi?

    1. Hi Budiman, big apologize for the late response..Tegal Wangi is an of-beaten path beach so definitely not recommended if you’re with a baby. I would recommend Petitenget Beach (park your car at the temple, next to La Lucciola Restaurant)-it’s a touristy beach but you can always find your spot, and children will love watching people playing kites or soccer, or go to Virgin Beach in Candi Dasa (2 hours from Denpasar); have lunch at Sundara Beach Club next to Four Seasons Jimbaran; watch the beautiful sunset on Kelan Beach, Jimbaran at on of their seafood restaurants (Avatar (formerly Wali Beach Cafe, was the place where we had our wedding reception). Most of the beaches at Labuan Sait,Uluwatu area are hard to reach and a long walk and lots of stairs, this is not suitable for family beach day out. Hope this helps, but not sure if you’re still in Bali or just left the island. Again, sorry for the late reply 🙁
