MALAYSIA, TARIK YOUR TEA HIGH!
I never thought I could meet these three Malaysian guys in my neighbourhood in Jimbaran owning an eatery offering authentic favourite cuisine from their country, with affordable prices and tasted real good, so delightful that the Malaysians themselves will nod and agree that this is what they are serving on their own tables. Roti Canai-Roti Prata-Teh Tarik-Curry Laksa-Hainan Chicken Rice, these are my limited food vocabularies when people ask about my knowledge of Malaysian Cuisine. I wasn’t wrong, right Hans, Karl, and Chee Hang?

The word ‘canai’ in Malay means ‘to roll out dough’. But I will not bore you with the history of the food nor with the differences we found in India, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Our blog has always been about the ‘eating experience’ and how we like it…or not. All we know is that Paper Planes is the best authentic Malaysian eatery we’ve ever tried so far. Before we went to this place, we thought we had experienced the best Roti Canai and Teh Tarik at another Indonesian warung type, still at the same area, until we met the owner, and chef, Hans who explained how a passion, skill, and patience could make a big difference between ordinary oily vapid roti canai and a mouth watery fluffy but crispy ones.
ONLY AT PAPER PLANES
They make their own Rotis, Kaya jam, and noodle dough with passion and patience. Everything is made from the scratch. I could taste the love in every bite of it. That’s why Benny, Geo and I came back for another round of Roti Canai, Hainanese Chicken Rice, the Three Layer Tea couple days after our first food tasting experience.
Special Promotion at Paper Planes: Happy Hour does exist at Paper Planes. Have you heard about their 22k on 22b Deal? So from 2pm – 5pm, any choice of Rotis on the menu together with either a cold/hot Teh Tarik will cost you only Rp 22,000! But what 22B stands for? Honey, it’s on their gate! Yess..the house number…Glad that you got it now *phew*.

What’s for dessert, Paper Planes? Brown sugar, ginger and tofu – sounds sweet, warm, and…bland at the same time? You might think like that, but better you try this signature dessert called Tau Foo Fah for yourself, you’ll be coming back for more. To get these perfectly silky slippery white dessert, Hans had gone some trials and errors, specially to make the tau foo strong soya odour gone. He did it!

Try Paper Planes Snow Beer that is colder than your ex’s heart, freezing!…Karl and Hans – the owner, explained how to enjoy this famous Bali Bintang at the lowest possible temperature without getting a tongue frostbite..

What else that is uniquely happened at Paper Planes, oh!.. two beetle bugs tried to kiss my neck, one of them landed crushed by my slap, leaving stinky odor on my skin – bring your mosquito/beetle repellent, and always watch your back..
HANG OUT ON THOSE RUSTIC FURNITURES
What we love about the place besides its delectable food, is the funky and cool rustic green-yellowish chairs and tables, paper planes stamps are spotted on the trees, on the walls, and on the tables. It is a place to enjoy Malaysia favorites with a relax and homey ambience, on a courtyard setting. We heard about Chef Kevin Cherkas from the Jimbaran culinary gem Cuca also visited Paper Planes craving for some rotis and laksa, perhaps? Thank you also for providing a decent high chair for our Baby Geo. Always appreciate an eatery who considers toddlers are important guests too. What we would love to see in the near future, hopefully a new western style rest room as the existing Indonesian squat toilet is really not suitable for little kids.

HOW TO GET ON BOARD TO THE PLANE
Located half way between Jimbaran Bay & Nusa Dua. Not too far after you pass big intersection of KFC-McD-Bali Taxi towards Nusa Dua, stay on the right side of the road, just across a petrol station and a traffic light, there is this residential complex Taman Griya. It is a rather chaotic local street with lots of mini-marts, warungs, food stalls. Follow the main street of Danau Batur Raya, it’s just opposite Primagama and BRI Bank, you’ll find a house number 22B with a Balinese style gate, funky chalk boards and nice little table settings on the courtyard with romantic fairy lights, and…paper planes on wooden sign board.
SOME USEFUL TIPS
- Book a table under the canopy when it looks like it’s going to rain (number below).
- They have a very limited number of menu, mostly pork. If you don’t eat pork, you’ll have only Curry Laksa, Hainan Chicken Rice as the ‘main course’ option, otherwise all kinds of rotis are available for nibbles, and they are super good!
- If you’re not comfortable with Indonesian squat toilet, make sure you go before you get there.

Love the Curry Laksa! We went there two times a week just for the Curry Laksa!
And we will definitely come back for more Roti Canai and Roti Prata. And will never miss the Three Layer Tea, oh yumm..I’m salivating just to type this!
